International Student Statistics of MIT in Asia

As an international student, it is very, very hard to get admitted to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). MIT is also regarded as one of the best universities around the world. Therefore, international student statistics of MIT will give us some clues about the quality of human capital in the field of science and technology from a specific country.

The table below is extracted from MIT International Students Office. Let's compare different South East Asia (SEA) countries:

Malaysia is not doing that bad, but some people in Malaysia should not look down on Thailand. Malaysians are not doing way better than Indonesians or Vietnamese. Singaporeans are doing much better than Malaysians, partly because their government is very supportive and generous in giving out scholarships. How about outside SEA? Population in Malaysia is larger than of Taiwan, but the number of people in MIT is less. Did you realize that South Koreans are famous for development of new strategy in Go (board game) and Starcraft 2? China, what else can I say?

  1. thailand is doing well.. they even have the synchrotron light source.. i think only singapore and thailand have that in SEA..
